Thinlay Namdul Rangdol (born May 31, 1994), known by his stage name Maynia Dhubee O.G is a Bhutanese rapper and songwriter in pursuit of the American Dream. Rangdol is an influential figure in the hip hop scene of Bhutan. He is currently pursuing his dreams of becoming a professional rapper.

Early Life

Thinlay Namdul Rangdol was born on May 31, 1994, in Kolkata (previously Calcutta), India. Rangdol was introduced to hip hop music at a young age but his passion for rapping only bloomed during his college days.

Education

Rangdol went to preschool at The Early Learning Center (TELC) in Thimphu. He then studied in Druk School, Thimphu till grade 9 from 2001-2009. He studied grade 10 in Pelkhil School, Thimphu before getting his International Baccalaureate (IB) at Kodai Kanal International School (KIS) in Tamil Nadu, India. Rangdol put his eduction on hold to pursue music after he failed to graduate from two colleges stating “I want to follow my heart”

Career

Rangdol recorded his first song under his real name. The rest of his songs are under the name Mania and Maynia Dhubee O.G. He has made 16 songs so far (14 collaborations and 2 solos) which were distributed through different Bhutanese recording labels and his own channel on SoundCloud and YouTube. Rangdol released his first album in 2018 titled “Joynt” comprising of 9 tracks which are all collaborations with Bhutanese artists. 2 of the tracks were released on YouTube and Facebook with Music Videos “Thimphu City Thugs Cypher” and “All I Ever Wanted”.

What inspired you to rap?

- I used to listen to a couple rap songs during school days but I never really wanted to be a rapper until I went to college. The people I hung out with were music enthusiasts so I got influenced. Day by day I became more passionate about hip hop (rap) and i wanted to explore this genre to the fullest. I saw a future in music.

What do u mostly rap about?

- I got influenced by rappers like Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, MGK and Tech Nine initially so i do freestyle rap. Big Daddy Kane said, "in the ’80s when we said we wrote a freestyle rap, that meant that it was a rhyme that you wrote that was free of style... it's basically a rhyme just bragging about yourself. Nowadays free styling is referred to rapping off the top or off the the dome. when you don't write it and say whatever comes to mind.

- Recently I started to write on subjects that are relatable to the society.

What do you ike about rapping?

- The freedom of expression, since i got influenced by the rappers i mentioned, my lyrical content is explicit and may not be appropriate to many.

- I love the language English. English, with its tons of idiosyncracies and pointless multiple synonyms for the same words, not to mention tons of slang, is great for rap, because any given idea can be expressed in so many ways. It offers loads of opportunities for complicated rhyme schemes and cadences.

- Most people say i speak too fast. Speed comes in handy in rap.

What is the most difficult part about rapping?

- Procrastination, the most feared enemy.

- In my opinion it’s making a good rap song. I don’t just want to make a song after song. I want each track to be better.

- It’s never easy to keep yourself motivated everyday. Progression is hard when there is a lack of motivation.

- The insecurity of sustainability.

What do u think the future holds for hiphop in Bhutan?

- The game is picking up, we have elevated the standard. Hip Hop is on the rise in Bhutan. Rap is gaining popularity at a fast rate and I believe in a few years time, opportunities will open up and our society will have a better perception of Hip Hop.
